Foundation

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine was founded on 12 November 1898, the first institution of its kind in the world, created in response to the health challenges faced by those working in tropical regions.

First Expedition

The School sent its first research expedition to Sierra Leone, establishing a tradition of field-based research that continues today.

Nobel Prize

Sir Ronald Ross, working at the School, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the malaria parasite transmission by mosquitoes.
